To coincide with the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The S.G. Bar held a Short & Fast Star Wars Art Competition in the span of a month. Only allowed to enter one peice, I couldn't settle on one image, I had the idea of the battle of Hoth raging over a huge stormtrooper helmet or vader with his grills breaking open in fury. But the idea came to me that I could do 9 artworks within the window design of a Tie Fighter.
I just wanted to get started and design the content later, So I did a reference search and decided to build it out of wood and thick plastic.
I found a glass circle in the backyard that could trace around, it had a 90cm diametre. Sawing it was dodgy, so I Invested in a Jigsaw, It chattered and cracked the plastic, So I redrew all handmade templates on MDF board.
I filed down all of the peices, Pva glued them into place and nailed in some extra rounded Tacks to immitate Bolts, then filed them down on the back.
The sides needed to be concealed to cover up the layers of wood, I found a rubber floor matt in Bunnings, cut 1cm strips out of it with a stanely knife and glued it around the circumference with Contact Adhesive.
I did a test with silver and black spray paint but you could tell the texture was wooden, and the specularity under a light source would be way too ugly. I undercoated it 3 times in black house paint, then built it up in shades of grey.
Took this picture, did a huge reference search, made a folder and started photoshopping them into the panels. First concept was the original trilogy told chronologically with the most memorable scenes, second was icons and characters which made for a more pleasurable viewing.
I refined it in the third one and ran into my own deadline so got started gridding them all up and sketching them onto the frame.
I used Oil Paints and within 2 days I had all of the base colours onto the board, I like to work on the peice as a whole overall, rather than sections at a time, for staying motivated and seeing the bigger picture sooner.
After looking at it for a few days the middle peice didn't sit with me very well, It tied the peice together with a message of Finality and death full circle leading into the newer movies.
It definatly had to be Vader as the centre peice all of the movies up until now centered around him.
But I felt like I could do a peice with more Detail, that would be alot more fun to paint, and show the man behind the mask.
I tried a couple, but ended up photoshopping elements of both together with adjustments.
I made the grid more detailed to get the proportions closer.
The whole thing took about 3 weeks, Painted within working full time.
I designed a big sticker to label the details on the back. I wanted a black and white computer label look, but taking on elements from the Straight Outta Compton logo. I made a bunch of smaller ones with blanked out text for future works. Printed out on Sticker paper from Officeworks.
